Interview with Kelly Knickerbocker - Freelance Contributor for Envy Magazine

2008-03-04

1. Tell me about your upcoming release "I Know Your Voice"... where was it recorded? How long did it take to record? Um, what aspect(s) of it are you most pleased and/or proud of? What should we expect, musically? What is the idea or story behind the title? What story is the CD telling? Where will it be available, and what is the approximate release date?

JON: Our debut cd was recorded in LA, CA. We went and tracked the songs at a few different studios including Sunset Sound, where legendary artists like Prince, Led Zeppelin and numerous others have recorded.
We had the longest recording process in the history of music I swear! There were some business changes in the company in the middle of our project, which led to a lot of waiting, but in the end we ended up with a project that is 10x better than if we had rushed through it.
The thing that makes me most happy about our cd is the catchiness and ‘singability’ of it. We really wanted every song to be capable of being a single and I think we have song after song that delivers those ‘epic’ song qualities…
You should expect hearing big, epic songs. Songs that land somewhere between goo goo dolls, jimmy eat world and nickelback… just kidding not nickelback… haha…
The story of the album title is a familiar thought that runs through the songs; ideas of spirituality, mistakes and feelings inside that lead your decisions that you can’t explain. The original title was to be I Know the Devil’s Voice but we thought it would be cool to let the reader determine whose voice it is. Depending on the person, it will have a different meaning for every song, and which character they play in the song, the victim or the victimizer.
The cd should release in April or May and should be available in most all-major retailers.

2. When you picture "the future" (near or distant), individually and as a Kessler, what are some of the things that you are MOST looking forward to? And what challenges do you foresee?

STEVE: I think we are all looking forward to getting out on the road in support of this album and being able to share it every night with many potential fans/friends. We can only hope that the audience will feel what we do when we're up on that stage performing.

3. What makes you guys unique? What about you guys sets you apart from other emerging artists? What has allowed Kessler to make it to this point, and what will carry you the rest of the way?

DEVIN: We're unique because we have a very possitive attitude, great songs through out the cd, we treat our fans well, and we will take the time for anyone. I believe it was God's hand that has brought us this far. Jay found us on myspace, came to the show and love it! What a miracle! God's favor and getting to know the right people have helped tremendously! We always felt that the people who hear our music love it; it was always a problem of how to get a million people to hear it. Radio distribution and hard touring will do just that, and I believe it will take us to the next level.

4. Tell me some stuff about YMA... general info.

JON: YMA is a new indie label, not a lot of artists right now because their goal is to really focus on breaking the ones they have. They have really taken good care of us and we are happy to be with them.

5. Where is your favorite place to play? Why?

STEVE: The Hardrock Cafe Dallas R.I.P. There was just an energy there that was unexplainable. Maybe it was the Rock N' Roll iconery all over the walls, or the fans lining the staircases, but that place was very special for us.

6. What did you think about LA... how is it different than Dallas?

DEVIN: LA is much more cutting edge, from the music you hear on the radio, to the style of dress. Things seem to hit there first and then move across the nation. It's also bigger than Dallas which means it takes forever to get any where out there. When walking down the street, you might actually have to step over a homeless person. Both cities are pretensous and trendy, but Dallas is over all, a more friendly city and more down to earth in all aspects of life. Dallas is home to me, but Florida and LA have become like home to me too. Just not as much like it though.

7. What is the best thing about being on the road? What aspects aren't as appealing?

STEVE: It's quite an adventure being out out the road. Meeting new people and sharing our art with them is truly great. It's a bittersweet feeling in the end though, because the toughest part is being away from home and loved ones for such a long period of time.

8. Music is spiritual for you guys, what role does God/spirituality play in regards to Kessler? Why do you feel like this is what God wants you to do with your life?

JON: It is everything. Christian Spirituality is more of a way of life than a belief system. We all are screw-ups, but that is the beauty of God, if we were able to do everything ourselves we wouldn’t be a broken people… I don’t think anyone would say they were perfect, that’s why we need God.
With our lives we can’t separate what is and isn’t Spiritual. To label one thing Spiritual would mean you label other things not Spiritual. That thought goes against what somebody much wiser than me said, “Whatever you do in speech or in action do it as unto God.”
Music is Spiritual…

9. Describe life in a van.

STEVE: Smelly. Smelly and crowded...

10. Describe life on stage, playing.

DEVIN Electrifying. Thrilling. Tiring. Enjoyable. Sweaty.

11. Describe your fans.

JON: We have the coolest fans in the history of fans. I think they want us to succeed even more than we do… not quite but almost. Haha! We have had people travel from Michigan to see us in Florida. We even asked them how they knew of us and what else they were in Florida for and they said ‘Heard ya’ll online and we had to come see you!’ and that is how awesome our fans are.

12. Describe snacks, music, time-passers, games, and conversational topics during road trips.

STEVE: While religion and politics are always fun to pass some time, we've invented a game we like to play called,"Who Would Win". Basically, someone comes up with a "match", for instance Pantera VS Avenged Sevenfold. From there we all argue who would win in a fist fight and why. However, anytime Avenged Sevenfold battles, Jon insists that they would win everytime because of their "dark" powers. That is unless they fought Chris Angel, in which he would cut them all in half and set there pieces on fire. : )

13. What's this on-going football challenge you have with bands you travel with?

STEVE: It's become a sort of tradition now that we've started where we thrown down the gauntlet of testosterone and duke out who's the king of the hill in pigskin. So far we are undefeated and besides, it's way more fun than just saying we rocked those guys of the stage last night. We have a "score" to prove it. : )

Top Ten Worst Things About Band-life

2008-06-21

10. Not enough cereal
9. Dirty Underwear
8. 4 hour sound checks... if it doesn't sound good after 3, there is no need for 4.
7. Sleeping with Jonathan
6. Sleeping with Devin
5. Taco Bell... Way too much Taco Bell
4. Drunkards... they are everywhere and they catch you in a corner and talk about their parents and their jobs over and over again and ask you about people they know that you have never met.
3. Loading and Unloading the Trailer, especially in the extreme weather conditions.
2. Signing another bands t-shirt at a show... it's not about the signing, just the fact that they didn't by your bands shirt and want to rub it in your face.
1. Looking for a bottle of water under your seat and finding someone else's pee bottle

Twas the Night Before Tour

2008-05-07

Every night before we leave for a new tour there are about 100 things that are begging to be done... making sure you packed enough underwear, reminding yourself to grab your toothbrush after you use it in the morning, setting your scooter out on the floor, you know the normal things but tonight, at 2:30am I'm up writing a blog for you guys... Tomorrow we leave for our ONSTAGE OUTRAGE TOUR with Capital Lights, Bidwell, and Rotterdam November. Luckily we have met all of these bands and we are so stoked to get to travel with them. But I have to wonder every time before leaving, 'Is anyone else, three states over as excited about this as I am?' I mean I know all the band guys are, and our close family and friends are excited for us and our 'people' on the business side are glad... but I'm wondering about the kids who buy shirts and take pictures. are they excited on a Wednesday night at 2:30am ten days away from the little show in their own town? I suppose I will soon find out. So whenever you guys read this, know that I was thinking of you first, before you ever thought of me... now back to the underwear

Seeing a hero...

2008-02-19

It was early evening and we'd just pulled into Anderson, SC. It was an off night during the 5 for 5 tour so we'd decided to stop and see a very good friend of ours. We drove up to New Spring Church and as we poured out of our van we were greeted by a man in his late twenties, glowing with a certain kind of unseen charisma seen only when one looks into the eyes of their hero.

It was Justin Land. Years earlier he had been the front man of a hugely popular Indie band from Atlanta named Honestly. If anyone has known us for more than four years than you'd recognize the name Eklipse. Before Kessler, we were a much harder rock band steeped in the kind of radio rock that was ruled by bands like Korn, Disturbed, and Godsmack. It was only the bands like Jimmy Eat World, The Julianna Theory, and for us Honestly that truly sounded unique in the world of what some people now call "butt rock".

To explain a little more, Justin in short is responsible for Kessler's existence today. Back when we were a fledgling band named Eklipse, and still a four piece by the way, Justin helped us produce our very first "real" recording in Atlanta. During the 2 week experience, Justin poured more wisdom, musical creativity, inspiration, and spirituality into us than we could ever have expected. There are very few times in life when you get the opportunity to meet someone who makes such an impact on your life that they are deserving of the name "hero". For the guitarist writing this to you now, it was life changing. Heck, by the time it was all said and done, we'd decided we could no longer keep our current name as a band. Eklipse wasn't who we were anymore and that is when Kessler was born. People ask us where we got the name and we routinely tell them it was the street our drummer Jonathan grew up on but it means so much more to us. Kessler represents the beginning of our journey together creating something more than just music but, something that reaches down into the depths of your being when you listen and speaks truth to it. Kessler was our rebirth into music and creativity.

A couple of months after our first encounter with Justin is when we wrote Outside Your Window, Bravo, Perfect, and Where are you - all right in a row! A flame had been started inside of us and it was igniting our passion like a wildfire.

So, as we walked up to the church and saw this highly respected man, I was overcome with the all of the feelings of inspiration and awe from over 3 years earlier. As I said earlier, it not often you get to meet your hero, but now I say it's even more rare that you get to tell them about it. Later in the evening at a sticky table in a nearby Waffle House, I sat down and told Justin how much of an impact he had made on me and all of us in the band. I felt as if I was the recipient of a million dollar prize and I was finally able to thank the person responsible for it. What's more is that my gratitude was excepted in return with the same amount of worth...

I'm writing this to all of you right now so that if you have a hero in your life you might tell them about it. Justin is not a celebrity or famous person but he left an imprint on my life helping to shape me into the person I am today. My hope is that you experience the joy I felt in letting someone know, who otherwise is an average joe, that they mean the world to a kid from Dallas.

It is very rare to meet a hero, and even more rare to tell them so...

Love~
